Editorial policy: how we choose products

This page explains how OhmNook researches products, chooses what to recommend, and keeps articles accurate.

How we choose products

  1. We start with the reader's job. For each article, we decide who it's for (for example "someone who works on a laptop and wants two screens") and what matters most to them.
  2. We research widely. That includes manufacturer specifications, product manuals, independent reviews, owner feedback, and hands-on use where we have the product.
  3. We compare on clear criteria. Every buying guide explains the criteria we used (such as ports, screen size, build, warranty and price) in a "How we chose" section.
  4. We pick before we look at commissions. Products are chosen on merit. Whether a retailer pays a commission doesn't affect which products we include or how we rank them.

Research and hands-on use

We're open about how each recommendation was made:

  • Hands-on: we have used the product ourselves. The article says so, and describes what we found.
  • Research-based: we haven't used the product personally. The recommendation is based on specifications, independent reviews and owner feedback, and the article says so.

We never claim to have used a product we haven't.

What we will and won't say

  • We describe what products are designed to do, and what we found. We don't make health claims: for example, ergonomic products are "designed for comfort", not "cures for back pain".
  • We don't promise security or data protection. We explain features and what they help with.
  • We point out drawbacks, including for products that earn us a commission.

Prices

OhmNook doesn't show or compare prices. We recommend products on their merits, so a good product can be featured even where only one retailer carries it. Prices change often, so the retailer's price when you click through is the one that applies.

Use of AI tools

We use AI tools to help with research, outlines and first drafts. Every article is then edited, fact-checked and signed off by a named person before it's published. AI tools never publish anything on their own.

Keeping articles up to date

  • We review buying guides at least every 6 months, and sooner when a product is discontinued or replaced.
  • Each article shows the date it was last reviewed.
  • When we update an article, we check the facts and picks again.

Corrections

If you spot a mistake, email [email protected]. We'll check it and correct the article if we got something wrong.

Independence

OhmNook is independent. Manufacturers and retailers can't pay to be included, to be ranked higher, or to review an article before it's published. See our Affiliate disclosure for how we make money.
